Olympic Competitions and Medals

Winter Olympics 2014

The school wide Olympic Unit has ended. It was a huge success!

Day One-Game competitions
All students were able to show off their Olympic skills the first day.  Our P.E. teachers came up with some incredible winter sports. It was great to watch the gym rotate around with excited students.  The timer was set for a couple minutes for each event. Students would move to the next event at the end of each round.

1. Corn hole Curling
(2 points for getting the bean bag in the hole, 1 point for getting it on the board)
2. Carpet Ice Skating
(Using their feet on carpets to race around the cone and back to the line)
3. Two man Bobsled
(Two students on the long scooter are pushed around the cone by another student and back to the line)
4. Skeleton
(Students lay on their bellies on a scooter and pull themselves around the cone and back to the line)

Day Two-Music and PowerPoint Presentations
Each grade level was given a continent (minus the Caribbean).  Then each class picked a country from that continent to study. Students worked in groups to create informational PowerPoints on their country and learn a song.  PowerPoints were on display so classes could learn about other countries in their continent.   My favorite part of the presentations was seeing how the kids drew their country flags on Microsoft Paint. Even the little ones did a great job adding details to their flag.

Flags:
I drew the country flag for each class (due to time constraints), then the students added color to their flag.  Each class walked in carrying their flag, just like the Olympic athlete parade.

Music:
Our incredible music teacher taught each class a song specifically about their country! I can't imagine how she was able to keep up with all of that music. They also played instruments and did dances for their country.  I was impressed.  One of my favorites was the Kindergarten banana shakers, adorable. I loved watching each class perform.

Kindergarten-North/Central America
(Costa Rico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Canada)
1st Grade-South America
(Chile, Brazil, Columbia, Argentina)

2nd Grade-Europe

3rd Grade-Africa

4th Grade-Asia

5th Grade-Caribbean

Day Three-Medals
The last day of our Olympics we had each of the grade levels wear a ring color.

Grade Level Ring Colors:
Kindergarten- Red
1st Grade- White
2nd Grade- Blue
3rd Grade- Black
4th Grade- Yellow
5th Grade Green

We handed out the Olympic medals that each student made in my class.  I found some great ribbon to tie on the medals so they could wear them around all day.  The metallic paint was a big hit.  I loved the final products.   Over 500 medals, metallic paint all over my tables, and some great school fashion! Kids are still wearing their medals to school weeks after we finished.

These are the gold, silver, bronze medals I made for the grade level winners. 80 medals total. My wonderful Enhancement team helped me tie all the ribbons and paint these awards.
